Day of the event. Meet at the Sakonnet Golf Club at 7:30am. Followed by:
Speed Tennis @ Sakonnet Golf Club
Bluff Jump & Swim @ Warren's Point Beach Club
Sailboat Race @ Sakonnet Yacht Club
Classifications:
Open Class - (18+) Both Participants must be 18 or older.
Master Class - (50+) Both Participants 50 or older.
Sorry, kids. This one is just for “grownups” (loosely defined as those over age 18).
Way back in 2007, a couple of newly-minted “grownups” decided that it would be fun to get the folks from different Sakonnet clubs to play together. They created the Sakonnet Ironman Triathlon, where, instead of swimming, biking, and running, competitors would swim(ish), play tennis and sail for glory and bragging rights. The idea was to get the tennis players to play with the sailors, the sailors to get on the courts, and for everyone to go off the bluff. It was silly and wacky and potentially hazardous. Everyone had a rollicking good time.
In order to combat this endemic, creeping child-centrism, we are bringing back the Adults-Only Sakonnet Ironman. Participants will once again compete in teams of two in three events: Speed Tennis (each team plays each other team in a single game), Bluff Swim Relay (one team member swims out to the bluff, and the other jumps off and swims in), and Double Handed Sailboat Race (dock start to harbor mouth and back). Clearly, this is not a test of athleticism, although old rivalries tend to resurface and cause trash talk and occasional sabotage.
This epic event will take place on Sunday, July 21, 2019, beginning at 8am sharp at the SGC tennis courts. So grab an adult buddy who complements your skills (or lack thereof) and makes you laugh, and sign up on the old-school signup posters at SYC, SGC, or WPBC. Registration is $25/person and guarantees a morning of good, (mostly) clean fun, followed by the traditional brunch of pizza and adult beverages. There will be the traditional, highly coveted and collectible prizes for the winners and cool tee shirts for everyone.
