The Junior Sailing Program is open to children age 9 and up (some eight year old children may be accepted on a case by case basis. Please see Sailing Director Ellie Field). Each session is four weeks long. Primarily, we use Optimist Prams and 420s, and supplement with Sunfish, Ynglings, Alden, and rowboats. All instructors are US Sailing Certified.
Children who are just beginning are put into a class called "beginner beginners" which is set up to teach basics and to help with the comfort level of each child. We have many instructors available to help with this class so that every child feels safe and cared for during their beginner experience. Children are then placed in a class according to their ability and comfort level.
Our goal is to have every child have fun, be safe, learn to sail, feel comfortable on the water and experience sailing in a way that is both challenging and exciting. Eventually, we want them all to love sailing!

Additionally, as a benefit for all sailors, we offer discounted membership in the US Sailing Association, the national association for leisure and competitive sailing. Membership in US Sailing is required for all sailors participating in Junior Race week. If you register for US Sailing through this US Sailing Link, SYC aggregates points that we use to lower the cost of Instructor Trainer programs, NSPS conferences or race committee training, etc.
